Letter to the Editor

Now that Obama has “caved in” on tort reform, something that actually needs to be done, I’m hoping that the Republicans can declare victory and get on board and get health care passed. I don’t want to end up in front of insurance company death panels.

Tort reform is bullshit, Marc. The legal system is messy, but it has a lot of human knowledge and wisdom embedded in it. We should not limit a citizen’s access to the courts nor tamper with the jury of his peers. Arbitration is an attempt to privatize the courts and leads down the same road as private soldiers, prisons, water supplies, etc.

Sure, there is some cost from frivolous suits, but think about it: how many greedy trial lawyers are going to gamble on frivolous suits? The incidence is greatly exaggerated. The cost is actually very very small in the overall scope of healthcare.

Frivolous law suits is a straw man. Corporate criminals actually want to destroy (privatize) our whole judicial system and see tort reform as a good assault weapon.
