Letter to the Editor
Next week President Obama will have his presidency tested when Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling. It is now clear the Congress isn’t going to pass anything, which leaves the President with two choices, he can either let America go into default or he can step up and save the American economy.
This is an artificial crisis that the Republicans are using as a power grab. Obama has been a weak negotiator and the Democrats have a reputation for folding faster than Superman on laundry day. The time of reckoning has now come and it’s time for Obama and the Democrats to step up.
What can Obama do? One thing he can do is recognize that Congress has already approved the increase of the national debt implicitly when they pass budgets where spending was greater than revenue. Obama and previous presidents haven’t spent a dime that Congress didn’t approve. Thus there is no reason to pass a debt ceiling increase because it has already been passed.
Obama, as President, can also invoke power in an emergency where the interests of the nation are at risk. The worst thing he can do is allow America to go into default because he doesn’t have the nerve to act. We can not allow government by blackmail to become the way America does business.
