WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Nick Berg was on his way out of Iraq. He had been released from the prison where he had been held for 13 days by Iraqi police for reasons he said he did not know. He had made his way from Mosul to his Baghdad hotel. He was finished with being an independent civilian contractor and was coming home to West Chester.

That was April 9. A month later, Berg's parents, Michael and Suzanne, still haven't heard from him. They've gone from concerned to frantic.

"Our hopes are that he's still in hiding or en route and traveling in a very slow manner," Michael Berg said.

A spokesman for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq who tracks the number of civilians missing in that country was unavailable for comment. But in mid-April, coalition spokesman Dan Senor said during a news briefing in Baghdad that about 40 people from 12 countries were missing and presumed hostages.

Nick Berg, 26, owns a business called Prometheus Methods Tower Service Inc. He climbs communications towers to inspect the antennas, the electrical connections and the structure. He first went to Iraq on Dec. 21.

He stayed until Feb. 1, making contact with a company that indicated there would likely be work for him later. But he returned on March 14 and there was no work, so he began traveling. He usually called home once a day and e-mailed several times; Michael Berg is his business manager, and they needed to stay in touch.

They spoke on March 24, and Nick Berg told his parents he was coming home on March 30. Then the communications stopped, and he wasn't on the plane on March 30.

When FBI agents arrived at the Berg's West Chester home on March 31, they were relieved to know their son was alive, but in jail. The agents questioned them about various details that only they and their son would know about.

Jerri Williams, spokeswoman for the Philadelphia FBI office, said the agency was "asked to interview the parents regarding Mr. Berg's purpose in Iraq."

On April 5, the Bergs filed suit in federal court in Philadelphia, contending that their son was being held illegally by the U.S. military in Iraq.

The next day, April 6, Nick Berg was released. He told his parents he had been riding in a taxi on March 24 when he was arrested by Iraqi officials at a checkpoint in Mosul. He told his parents he had not been mistreated.

Nick Berg said he would come home through Jordan, Turkey or Kuwait. But by then, hostilities in Iraq had escalated, and Michael Berg said they have not heard from their son since.

The Bergs have hounded the State Department, the FBI and the International Committee of the Red Cross, seeking information. Michael Berg said the State Department sent an official to Nick Berg's hotel, where an employee told the official they had not heard of him.

The Bergs hired a private investigator, who talked to an American hotel guest who said he remembered Nick Berg.

Sometimes, they tell themselves their son "is a resourceful fellow who can take care of himself," Michael Berg said.

"Other times we think perhaps he was dead on April 10," he said. "My worst fear is that I'll never hear anything."

No the terrorists live next door to patriots and have online alias such as fagnot.

I'm surprised that our slain countryman's father blamed the administration of W-Bush for this act, rather than the "men" who videotaped themselves cutting off his son's head. I feel, at best, that this is blind anger. I can understand disliking the current administration, though I do not. I can understand disagreeing with the war in Iraq, though I do not. Still, Erik Berg made the decision as an adult to go to Iraq. He was advised to leave the country, yet bravely stayed. He was even offered a plane ticket home. It seems to me that he made a very noble, yet costly decision...to himself, his family, and in a certain sense...to the already poor conscience of humanity. Even Hezbollah has denounced this act...what more does one need? I sincerely feel for those who were close to Nick Berg and now mourn, but to turn the pain felt over a deceased loved-one into a political issue is, I feel, very narrow in thought. Granted, I am not dealing with that loss on a personal level as they are, but I feel, as many people likely do, that as much as anger may be a step in the process of mourning, there is no excuse for playing on the hearts of people in the name of blatant political bias.

TouchNova

what bothers me is how comfortable he looks in the video, almost like he is acting.

I don't think he knew he was about to be killed, the knife was pulled out from under the killers shirt. As for the AK's, he was captive for over a month, he was probably used to seeing them carry weapons around.

Who cares what the Freepers say. there points are mostly pointless. It is a "little" RAH-RAH site for a couple of people that see the world one way. And they are not sure what way that is.

exactly why was nick berg arrested by the us army/iraqi police anyway? ive read that he was held for 13 days, thats a long time to keep a 'do gooder' under arrest. a telecommunications genius a computer expert that could of make a fortune in silicone valley hmm, what if the us army found out that he was'nt what he seemed? a jewish white american that became converted to the koran ( ive heard that he had the koran and an anti sematic book in his posesion, true or not i dont know)just think one of americas children helping the people that despise america and the west, being anti war probably wouldnt be a good enough reason for us troops to murder him would it? but helping the enemy is a different kettle of fish altogether, surely the press around the would have spotted the white hands, time jump , jumbled reading from the sheets of paper ect on the video, here in the uk fate pics of torturing iraqi POWs where scanned with a fine toothed comb, so why not do the same with the video? Bergs father cant really say anything against the army if this is the case because his life wouldnt be worth living, "oh hi your the guy whos son helped bin laden" hes gonna shut the hell up thats what i say

im sorry that this happened. it's time for people to "wake up"
why was this man over there in a war torn country to start with? im sure that somewhere deep inside of him, that he knew there was a chance, he could be killed. he chose to go and possibly die. more americans should help their own people in america, and let other countries take care of themselves. im sorry for his family.

Our Military has a very important job to do over there, Nick Berg knew we were at war at the time that he decided to go. Our Military can not worry about helping people safely out of Iraq. If our military is busy escorting inquisitive people safely from that country, That's less time they have on getting the job done and coming home to their families.
Please do not blame this on our Military,
God rest his soul and Please God protect our service people.
