The Decider insists on English

Letter to the Editor

Bush says that the national anthem should be sung in English, not Spanish. What I find amazing is that people want to sing the anthem at all considering the stolen elections, the fake war in Iraq, the domestic spying, the secret CIA torture camps, the corruption, lawlessness, and corporate greed. And in spite of being threatened with deportation and prison these hard working people still want to sing the anthem. I say why not? But Bush says if they are going to live in America they need to learn the language. And Bush gets to say that because he's the "decider".

The $100 Bribe

Letter to the Editor

In the face of rising gas prices and record profits by the oil companies the Republicans have a brilliant idea as to how to fix the gas price crisis. The solution - give everyone a $100 election year bribe. It's not just that it's a really bad idea, but that the Republican's think the voters are dumb enough to fall for it. Or maybe they understand the voter, which is even worse. I guess they are so used to getting bribes that it never occurs to them that it's wrong. We are a nation in serious trouble.

Coverage of cynthia McKinney extremely racist

Every network is featuring Cynthia McKinny's remarks calling someone a fool. As if that is some kind of news or something. why is calling someone a "fool" even interesting? because she's a blak woman and the news media is trying to put the nigers in the back of the bus. CNN has had the story on their front page for almost a week now.

Concerns about Clam Antivirus droping the ball

I've been a big fan of Clamav as an anti-virus solution for server side spam filtering under Linux. But I'm running a 64 bit server and the server daemon hasbeen dying with segment faults a few times an hour. I set up a process to check and restart it every 5 minutes and with 3 servers I'm never down at the same time, but it was a real annoyance.

I finally found a solution that was a one like patch that fixed the problem. I am however concerned that the folks at Clam AV are not taking it seriously and have yet to offer an official fix. I don't think they get it that reliability is important.

To fic the problem go to the file:

libclamav/zziplib/zzip-zip.c

After the lines:

#include sys/stat.h
#include unistd.h

Add this line and recompile.

#include "others.h"

Lend and Forgive Cycle

Letter to the Editor

U.S. Secretary of the Treasury John Snow said Sunday that the United States should end it's policy of lending money to poor nations and forgiving the debt. I question if it's wise to take that position now that we are 9 trillion dollars in debt ourselves. At some point in the future we are going to have to stop our borrow and spend policies and start paying down our national debt. If America takes a harsh position against the debt of poor countries then who will have compassion for us when we come to the world with our hat in our hand asking for help? America needs to be both compassionate towards others and fiscally responsible for our own borrowing. Right now we are neither.

Bush Screws Arnold Schwarzenegger Again

Letter to the Editor

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger strongly criticized Bush Saturday because he refused to declare a federal disaster for California's fragile levees. And Arnold is surprised by this? In 2004 Arnold could have fixed the levy problem and most all other California problems by opposing Bush for president so that the "dicider" wouldn't continue to ruin America. But instead Arnold make a last minute run to Ohio to help put Bush over the top. Had Arnold declared Bush to be the worst president ever then Bush would have lost and Arnold would get his levy money from a new president.

Now it's election year for Arnold and his karma has returned to haunt him. He put politics ahead of the people. It was more important to be loyal to Republicans than to act for the good of the people. So if there is any silver lining to this it is a lesson for people in both parties that if you don't put the people first then you will suffer the consequences. Unfortunately the people have to suffer the consequences too.

Gas Price Gouging

Letter to the Editor

"I'm concerned about higher gasoline prices," Bush says. "The government has the responsibility to make sure that we watch very carefully and investigate possible price-gouging, and we will do just that," Do I believe that? I still remember how he said he was going to investigate the leaks related to the outing of the CIA agent. Bush called for a criminal investigation to "get to the bottom" of it just to find out that he was the one behind it.

They can pretend that the high price of gas is because of "world demand" and "political uncertainty" and "converting to ethanol", but when I see the president of Exxon getting a retirement bonus of close to half a BILLION dollars it's pretty clear that it's greedy oil companies raping the public again. These are the guys who met in secret with vice president Cheney to create the energy policies that make them rich and us poor. When the oil companies are showing record profits it doesn't take a genius to figure out that if they made a little less then we would be paying less at the pumps. The quickest way to bring down gas prices is to impeach Bush and Cheney.

Republicans = High Priced Gas

Letter to the Editor

People are guessing about why gas prices are so high. Some say it's worldwide demand. Others say that it's related to hurricanes. But when it comes down to it the real reason is that it's about corporate greed. Electing Republicans is like voting for $100 a barrel oil and $5.00 a gallon gas. When the people are hurting while the oil companies are swimming in money you know the Republicans are in power.

How can you declassify information you don't know about?

Letter to the Editor

Bush's latest story is that he declassified the information that Scooter Libby leaked to the press and therefore there was no leak of classified material. But Bush had previously stated that he knew nothing about the leaks and called for a criminal investigation to “get to the bottom” of the scandal. I'm having a hard time grasping the concept that Bush could declassify something that he didn't know about. If Bush didn't know then he couldn't have declassified it. If Bush lied then he too is obstructing justice. He would have called for a special prosecutor to get to the bottom of something he knowingly started? I vote to impeach.

If Bush can't say Nuclear - he shouldn't start a nuclear war

Letter to the Editor

I think that Congress should pass a law that says if the President can't properly pronounce the word "nuclear" that he shouldn't be allowed to start a nuclear war with Iran. Maybe that will keep the moron from wiping out civilization.

Bush says he wants to get to the bottom of the leaks

Remember this?

Q Do you think that the Justice Department can conduct an impartial investigation, considering the political ramifications of the CIA leak, and why wouldn't a special counsel be better?

THE PRESIDENT: Yes. Let me just say something about leaks in Washington. There are too many leaks of classified information in Washington. There's leaks at the executive branch; there's leaks in the legislative branch. There's just too many leaks. And if there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is. And if the person has violated law, the person will be taken care of.

And so I welcome the investigation. I -- I'm absolutely confident that the Justice Department will do a very good job. There's a special division of career Justice Department officials who are tasked with doing this kind of work; they have done this kind of work before in Washington this year. I have told our administration, people in my administration to be fully cooperative.

I want to know the truth. If anybody has got any information inside our administration or outside our administration, it would be helpful if they came forward with the information so we can find out whether or not these allegations are true and get on about the business.

------

President Bush's chief spokesman said yesterday that the allegation that administration officials leaked the name of a CIA operative is "a very serious matter" and vowed that Bush would fire anybody responsible for such actions.

The vow came as numerous Democratic leaders demanded the administration appoint a special counsel to investigate the charges that a CIA operative's name was divulged in an effort to discredit her husband, a prominent critic of Bush's Iraq policy. The White House rejected those calls, also saying it has no evidence of wrongdoing by Bush adviser Karl Rove or others and therefore no reason to begin an internal investigation.

"There's been nothing, absolutely nothing, brought to our attention to suggest any White House involvement, and that includes the vice president's office, as well," said Scott McClellan, Bush's press secretary. He said that "if anyone in this administration was involved in it, they would no longer be in this administration."

Justice Department officials said yesterday they have begun a preliminary probe into whether an administration official violated the law by telling journalists that the wife of former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, a prominent critic of Bush's use of intelligence related to Iraq, worked for the CIA. Wilson has drawn attention for his report on a trip he took to Niger for the CIA that, he said, did not confirm an administration charge that Iraq's Saddam Hussein was seeking nuclear materiel in that country.

A senior official quoted Bush as saying, "I want to get to the bottom of this," during a daily meeting yesterday morning with a few top aides, including Rove. Senior intelligence officials said yesterday that the CIA filed what they termed a "crime report" with the Justice Department in late July, shortly after syndicated columnist Robert D. Novak, citing two unnamed administration sources, identified Wilson's wife by name. The CIA report pointed to a "possible violation of federal criminal law involving the unauthorized disclosure of classified information."

-----------------

Q: Yesterday we were told that Karl Rove had no role in it --

THE PRESIDENT: Yes.

Q: -- have you talked to Karl and do you have confidence in him --

THE PRESIDENT: Listen, I know of nobody -- I don't know of anybody in my administration who leaked classified information. If somebody did leak classified information, I'd like to know it, and we'll take the appropriate action. And this investigation is a good thing.

Q: Scott, you have said that you, personally, went to Scooter Libby, Karl Rove and Elliot Abrams to ask them if they were the leakers. Is that what happened? Why did you do that, and can you describe the conversations you had with them? What was the question you asked?

McClellan: They're good individuals, they're important members of our White House team, and that's why I spoke with them, so that I could come back to you and say that they were not involved. I had no doubt of that in the beginning, but I like to check my information to make sure it's accurate before I report back to you, and that's exactly what I did.

Q: So you're saying -- you're saying categorically those three individuals were not the leakers or did not authorize the leaks; is that what you're saying?

McClellan: That's correct. I've spoken with them.

Q: But can you confirm that the President would fire anyone on his staff found to have leaked classified information?

McClellan: I think I made that very clear last week. The topic came up, and I said that if anyone in this administration was responsible for the leaking of classified information, they would no longer work in this administration.

Here is Scott McClellan again on October 7, 2003....
McClellan: If someone leaked classified information, the President wants to know. If someone in this administration leaked classified information, they will no longer be a part of this administration, because that's not the way this White House operates, that's not the way this President expects people in his administration to conduct their business.

Carl Cameron insists President Bush never promised to fire over the leak.. McClellan on October 7, 2003...
McClellan: No, no. Let me answer what the President has said. I speak for the President and I'll talk to you about what he wants.

-----------------

Now we know it was Bush who authorized the leak. I'm sure glad we have an honest president.

EFF Tries to stop Bush Wire Tapping

Internal AT&T Documents Had Been Temporarily Held Back Due To Government's Concerns

San Francisco - The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) this week filed the legal briefs and evidence supporting its motion for a preliminary injunction in its class-action lawsuit against AT&T. After asking EFF to hold back the documents so that it could review them, the Department of Justice consented to EFF's filing them under seal -- a well- established procedure that prohibits public access and permits only the judge and the litigants to see the evidence. While not a party to the case, the government was concerned that even this procedure would not provide sufficient security and has represented to the Court that it is "presently considering whether and, if so, how it will participate in this case."

"The evidence that we are filing supports our claim that AT&T is diverting Internet traffic into the hands of the NSA wholesale, in violation of federal wiretapping laws and the Fourth Amendment," said EFF Staff Attorney Kevin Bankston. "More than just threatening individuals' privacy, AT&T's apparent choice to give the government secret, direct access to millions of ordinary Americans' Internet communications is a threat to the Constitution itself. We are asking the Court to put a stop to it now."

EFF's evidence regarding AT&T's dragnet surveillance of its networks includes a declaration by Mark Klein, a retired AT&T telecommunications technician, and several internal AT&T documents. This evidence was bolstered and explained by the expert opinion of J. Scott Marcus, who served as Senior Technical Advisor for Internet Technology to the Federal Communications Commission from July 2001 until July 2005.

The internal AT&T documents and portions of the supporting declarations have been submitted to the Court under a tentative seal, a procedure that allows AT&T five court days to explain to the Court why the information should be kept from the public.

"The public deserves to know about AT&T's illegal program," said EFF Legal Director Cindy Cohn. "In an abundance of caution, we are providing AT&T with an opportunity to explain itself before this material goes on the public docket, but we believe that justice will ultimately require full disclosure."

The NSA program came to light in December, when the New York Times reported that the President had authorized the agency to intercept telephone and Internet communications inside the United States without the authorization of any court. Over the ensuing weeks, it became clear that the NSA program has been intercepting and analyzing millions of Americans' communications, with the help of the country's largest phone and Internet companies, including AT&T.

"Mark Klein is a true American hero," said EFF Staff Attorney Kurt Opsahl. "He has bravely come forward with information critical for proving AT&T's involvement with the government's invasive surveillance program."

In the lawsuit, EFF is representing the class of all AT&T residential customers nationwide. Working with EFF in the lawsuit are the law firms Traber & Voorhees, Lerach Coughlin Stoia Geller Rudman & Robbins LLP and the Law Office of Richard R. Wiebe.

The Gospel of Reality

Letter to the Editor

When the president breaks the law it sets a bad example for society, especially the children. It is like telling the world that America is a fundamentally dishonest nation. Our president is a criminal, a liar, and an election cheater. He lies to send men away to die. He takes food from the poor and medicine from the old to give fat cat corporations a tax break, leaving the poor folk with a 9 trillion dollar debt. What does this tell the world about us? What example does it set for the children? And how will it affect our future.

I call on all the people of the world that it is time that we embrace the power of Reality. That we turn to Reality to make our important decisions. We need to think about Reality when we vote. There's a new Gospel. There's a new holy book. There's a new way of looking at religion and experiencing the real world as it really is. The Gospel of Reality. In these troubled times when nations contemplate nuclear war and weapons of mass destruction, what is it that gives us the moral certitude to help us decide that wiping out the human race is a really bad idea? There is but one source of true wisdom, and that is to open your hearts to Reality, embrace the real world, and commit your life to making decisions that make sense. Because if we turn our backs on Reality, Reality will punish us.

Bush caught lying again

Letter to the Editor

Now we find out that Bush was the one who gave the order to tell Scooter Libby to leak government secrets to the press for the purpose of political revenge that led to the outing of the name of a CIA agent. But, since Bush is above the law when it comes to illegal wiretapping I suppose that this is legal too because he's above the law. After all, America is at war. A war he got us into by lying. Will someone please give Bush a Monica so we can impeach him?

Get to the back of the bus nigger!

Letter to the Editor

One thing I thing we can agree on about who hit who first is that I doubt that the Capitol Police will fail to recognize Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney's face now. Sometime you have to hit someone to get them to remember you.

-------

Just another way for cops to try to intimidate blacks. I think Cynthia McKinney was being hassled by racist cops. When you work in a place for 11 years they can't say they didn't know who you were. That's bullshit.

Vonage Sucks - Won't Release my number for Transfer

I used to be a Vonage fan but no more. I'm trying to transfer a phone number away from Vonage. I had intended to keep the service under a different number but now I'm not going to.

I got my number originally from SBC and transferred it to Vonage. But I never thought at the time I transferred it that they would attempt to keep it and keep me from transferring it to anyone else. What they are doing is highly illegal and I'm not going to put up with it. I'm still figuring out how to proceed but the normal processes aren't working. So I need to do something extreme.

In the mean time - DON'T USE VONAGE - they are just a bunch of fucking theives.

Zogby excludes Realists from Survey

Dear Church of Reality Members,

A few months ago I asked you to email Zogby polling to ask them to add Atheist/Realist/Humanist as a chouce of religion in their polls. They did for about two surveys. But I just got the latest survey and the Atheist/Realist/Humanist choice have been removed. So at 77% completed I stopped filling out the survey. The way I see it, if our religion isn't included then I'm not going to participate in their polls. Zogby has moved towards anti-realism in that the only religions the recognize are theists religions.

I am not going to participate in Zogby polls anymore and I'm sending him a copy of this email to let him know that. I don't understand why we are no longer worth counting, but if we aren't worth counting then our opinions aren't worth anything either and I'm not going to help any organization who only counts Theists religions.

I encourage you to write them and tell them how you feel about this.

Republicans are a Cancer on America

Letter to the Editor

How bad does America have to get before we impeach Bush? Do we do it now, or do we wait till things get much worse? The Republican party is a cancer on America and it needs to be removed as soon as possible.
